SPIRIT OF ECSTASY
A pair of highly detailed pen and ink sketches, depicting the side profiles of the 'Spirit of Ecstasy' figurine adopted by Rolls-Royce Limited as their factory mascot in 1911. The drawing is not dated but beleived to have been completed around mid-1910 and is signed 'Charles Sykes' below the right figure. Shaded in what appears tobe grey charcoal or pencil to the body area, mimicking the nickel-silver plating of the original mascot casting. Framed and glazed, measuring approximately A5 in format. Charles Robinsob Sykes (18 December 1875 - 6 June 1950) was an English sculptor, born in the North East of England in Brotton, who was best known for designing the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot for Rolls-Royce cars.
The Spirit of Ecstasy, also called "Emily", has featured on all Rolls-Royce cars produced during the past 107 years in both kneeling and standing forms.
Provenance - The property of a lady, whose father was by repute the personal gardener and handyman of Charles Sykes. The drawing was kept as a souvenir and have been in the same family ownership ever since.
Potentially one of the most important pieces of Roll-Royce ephemera to come to market in recent years.
Please note - these drawings were offered through our July 2018 auction of automobilia and sold for 7,875.00 pound. Unfortunately, due to non-payment by the buyer, we are pleased to re-offer this lot for sale.
My name is Raymond Richard, a collector of the Beatles, Rolls-Royce and Bentley collectibles such as books and automobilia, ever since I was eleven years old.
In all of those years my collection grew and never stopped growing. I also bought duplicates and I’m sure I can make fellow collectors happy with some of those items. They are all fairly priced, often less then I payed for them back in the days. That’s why I started the simple webshop RR07. If you would like to purchase anything from the shop, also consider swapping.
I’m located in Holland and I’m happy to invite you here. It is a possibility to stay overnight, in one of the luxurious suites I own. If you arrive in your Rolls-Royce or Bentley, I provide an enclosed garage. Interested? Click here for more details.
